Already at the end of the 1700s, there were researchers who suspected that what later became known as argon was found as a constituent in ordinary air, but it was not until 100 years later that one actually managed to prove it in two different ways.
Firstly, it was discovered when it was noticed that nitrogen produced by chemical compounds was lighter than nitrogen from the atmosphere. Secondly, new lines in the air’s color spectra were discovered. Both phenomenon are caused by the fact that argon is heavier than other gases in the air.
