Industrial gas provider AGA launched its new hydrogen production unit yesterday at the Neste refinery located in Kilpilahti, Porvoo, Finland. The new production unit will be operated by its owner AGA, and is to produce about one fifth of the hydrogen needed by the Neste Porvoo refinery.
The unit has been built by AGA, while Neste has been responsible for the groundwork, as well as the installation of the necessary underground pipes and electrical lines between the old and new refinery. The new unit replaces an older Neste production facility in the same area, increasing the refinery’s capacity to produce hydrogen.
The hydrogen production unit launched is the largest and most modern of its kind in the history of AGA. It is also internationally significant to AGA’s German parent company Linde Group. The unit substantially expands the collaboration in gas deliveries between Neste and AGA.
“It makes me proud that Neste has chosen AGA as its partner. Our collaboration during the project has been seamless, and I am looking forward to meeting the expectations Neste has for both our facility concept and us in the future”, says AGA’s Account Manager Tonnage Kosti Jylhä.
Remote accessibility and energy efficient top technology
The new Porvoo unit produces hydrogen from natural gas by steam reforming process. The hydrogen is used in several different processes and products at the refinery, for example in the production of sulfur-free diesel products and high quality basic oils.
The unit is designed and realized by Linde Engineering, with a modern and energy efficient facility as their concept. Another significant factor in the technology of the new unit is its remote accessibility: the unit is operated and monitored from AGA’s parent company Linde Group’s monitoring center in Germany.
